Publishing Services - Mechanical Editing Service

Good mechanical editing typically adds $600 to $1,500 to the cost of publishing a book - quickly moving the cost of pre-press production into the stratosphere. It’s too much. The Chicago Manual of Style Mechanical Editing services we offer our publishers is quite sophisticated - and $350 is a more typical cost.

Mechanical Editing goes far beyond proofreading to comprehensive manuscript coverage and includes detailed editing for structural continuity and accuracy. This includes 18 different categories of editing (see the entire list of Mechanical Level Editing Specifications here) for structure and accuracy.

Mechanical Editing is *not* what is commonly called Substantive editing. Mechanical Editing is very deep editing for structural continuity and accuracy, but it does not, for instance, make suggestions for improving the actual content (story) of your manuscript, or check for cited references, or identify inconsistencies within the story. There is a section in our Mechanical Level Editing Specifications list that fully defines what it is not, in addition to what it is.
