E-book Device Stores (a.k.a. Libraries) and WebsitesAll new Accurance EDAPT™ titles will appear on the ‘home’ e-book store libraries found on each e-book reader device, for the following devices:
- Apple iPad iBooks
- Amazon Kindle
- Sony e-Reader
- Barnes and Noble Nook
- Kobo (Borders) e-Reader
- Google ebook site
In the coming months, there will be an additional five to fifteen devices as well. However, those listed above are ‘the big five’, constituting the place the vast majority of e-book sales are made, for every one of the largest market-share devices. All titles distributed are also featured on the e-bookstore websites of these same firms (currently, Apple iBooks does not have an e-bookstore website, so is the sole exception), and all titles can also be purchased through iTunes on iPhones as well.
Time Lapse from E–book Files Ready until ‘Live and For Sale’ on E-book Device Libraries and Websites
The distribution system for each firm having an e–book device in our system, has particular gateways, quality control systems and operations required to take an e–book title from ‘received’ until that title is ‘live’ and available for sale. Here is the average time lapse for each device, from the time the e–book versions for a title are completed and approved by our Accurance clients, and our client has completed correctly the distribution form necessary, until the title appears ‘live’ and for sale:

It is expected that over the next few months, the average time lapse will decrease, but there may be peak traffic times for all parties, as the industry experiences present explosive growth, that temporarily cause time lapse to be higher as well.
Client Royalties
The percentages of gross revenue sales* royalties payable to the Accurance client (whether a publisher or author) for sales occurring on each device or website, are as follows:
Apple iPad iBooks |
|
Amazon Kindle |
|
Sony e-Reader |
|
Barnes and Noble Nook |
|
Kobo (Borders) e-Reader |
* Each e-book device e-book store vendor has policies that, for instance, enable them to debit the client account for mutually-agreed upon extra services. Those debits would occur on the royalty payment account in some instances. |
** Amazon / Kindle, as has been their history, have been fighting publishers and authors on royalties, and that fight and negotiations are not over. Additionally, the higher Amazon royalties paid have a number of restrictions on pricing, pricing compared to the competitive e-Readers, pricing compared to the printed version of the title and more. All these issues will greatly affect the royalties paid for individual titles for the foreseeable future. The Accurance EDAPT™ network is at the forefront of this ongoing battle and we expect breakthroughs such that much of this Amazon foot-dragging will no longer apply to our clients. |
Sales Reporting and Payment
Sales and royalty reporting and payout, vary in their frequency among the e-book store providers. Below is a guideline table of the current frequency of royalty reporting and payments made currently by each provider. There is a ‘wait’ time initially for new EDAPT™ clients as each of these ‘Big Five’ retailers and network partners each have their own schedules for periodic payables. In other words, it is likely that our clients don’t receive royalties until 60 days after sale, but once that pipeline is filled, then regular royalty payments will be made monthly.
Currently, Accurance delivers royalty payments and their associated data manually. However, our expectation is that in January or February 2012, our on-line royalty and sales reporting console will be available on the Accurance website and each EDAPT™ client of ours will be able to see all sales data reported on their own password-enabled account, 24/7. All titles in the EDAPT™ distribution system for a client will be shown, including a breakdown by retailer showing where each title is selling.

Accurance EDAPT™ Clients Already Distributed
For users of the old EDAPT™ system, if you contact your Accurance Project Manager and request it, Accurance will move you over to the new system. Please note that in the old system, many details are different and you will want to review the differences with your Project Manager carefully before making the decision to change over.
Everything Changes Always
If you have never been a part of a new and exploding industry, you are in one now. All particulars are changing, at a very high rate of speed, with all the players in the e–book industry. It is the nature of a new and exploding industry, don’t take it personally, but please also don’t pretend it is avoidable. You must be aware that all the details listed above are subject to change without notice. There is no way around this in an industry that is evolving so quickly. If you are a publisher, you must tell your author client of the nature of the situation, or you run the risk of having dozens of ‘but you said’ conversations months or years from now. If you do not want to accept this unavoidable dynamic nature, please don’t participate in the e-book distribution industry.
EDAPT Fees
There are two fees within the EDAPT distribution system:
- the portion of revenue from sales of a title taken out, and indicated above, before royalties are paid
- $25 per title for set-up and upload processing
